Ball carrier to create space, protect the ball and go forward in close contact situations. Current NZ Under 20 and current 4 times National championship winning Canterbury Coach Rob Penny explains the key skills aspects of close contact evasion. The focus is placed on evading the defender, protecting the ball and creating a weak shoulder in the contact situation. Suitable for all levels. Level: All Levels Categories: Attack Coaching Points: 00:0:26.000 - Eyes up, looking for threat while carrying the ball in two hands 00:0:28.000 - Attack an edge or weak shoulder of the defender 00:0:30.000 - Close to contact ‘ignite the turbos’ 00:0:32.000 - Protect the ball by ensuring the ball is away from the defender Common Faults: #1. Decelerating into contact #2. Ball before body #3. Attacking the defender square on with no foot work Progressions: #1. Add more players #2. Add decision making aspect by randomizing the defence #3. Add attack and support, providing offloading options Instructions: #1. 2 players- one defender and one ball carrier. #2. Ball carrier moves into the contact area with ball in two hands. #3. As tackler approaches, ball carrier shifts the ball away from the tackler and uses his free arm to fend off the defender/ tackler #4. Ball carrier uses foot speed and acceleration to step away from the tackler. Contributors: #1.
