Closed syllable exceptions are closed syllables that are exceptions to the closed syllable rule. A closed syllable has ONE vowel, the vowel is closed in by at least one consonant at the end, and the vowel makes a short sound. In closed syllable exceptions, there is ONE vowel, the vowel is closed in by a consonant, but the vowel is making its long vowel sound. The five closed exceptions are -ild, -ind, -old, -olt, & -ost.
