Let's review some of the most common handshape mistakes in new ASL learners. The handshape in ASL is the position held by the hand and fingers to create a sign. Each position gives specific meanings to certain words, using the wrong hand shape can change the meaning and cause confusion in conversation. For example: a closed hand, an open hand, or a curved hand all indicate a different sign, completely altering the meaning of the word being formed. Another common error handshape is the sign for I and MY. The sign for I is signed with an index finger (not a flat palm and not with 2 fingers. The sign for MY is signed with a flat palm again your chest. Sign precision is so important for comprehension in ASL.
