Common Pond Mistakes| How to Avoid
Building a backyard pond can be incredibly rewarding… but there are a few common mistakes that can cause big problems later on. In this video I walk through some of the most common pond issues I see people run into, including: • Choosing the wrong pond location • Building ponds that are too shallow • Underestimating filtration and circulation • Oversizing or undersizing pumps • Overstocking fish • Overfeeding fish • Cleaning ponds too aggressively • Letting plants completely take over One of the biggest misunderstandings with ponds is how waste actually behaves in the system. Fish waste, uneaten food, leaves and organic material don’t simply disappear. They are broken down by organisms and eventually become sediment in the pond, much like leaves breaking down into soil on a forest floor. Understanding that natural process helps you design ponds that are far more stable and far less work to maintain. The goal of Ozponds has always been to help people build beautiful, natural looking ponds without spending a fortune. The Ozpond System Every pond I build follows the same basic principles. I’ve put the formulas and design ideas I use into the Pond Formulas Blueprint, which shows you how to size things like: • bog filters • pump flow rates • intake bays • circulation systems The goal isn’t to copy my ponds — it’s to give you a simple system you can use to design your own dream pond. You’ll also get access to a private community of pond builders following the same framework, plus Virtual Kev, an AI assistant trained on the Ozponds system that can help you explore design ideas and run calculations. You can learn more here: https://ozponds.com If you’ve built a pond and would like to share your project, you can also submit it on the website. I love seeing what people create and occasionally feature ponds from the community in future videos.
