Communication Systems 17. Frequency Modulation-Basic Principles

This is the first, in a series of lectures that cover frequency and phase modulation. The series covers basic definitions, spectrum and bandwidth, generation and demodulation. In this lecture, we present only the basic principles of angle modulation where the message signal changes either the instantaneous frequency or the phase deviation of the carrier. When the phase deviation changes linearly with the message, the result would be a phase modulated signal. When the instantaneous frequency deviation changes linearly with the message, that would be frequency modulation. A number of examples are presented for demonstration. References M. P.
