Confess

Although the numerous Jane Austen films have renewed the interest for Regency dances, dancers should bear in mind that the older dances edited by John Playford are even more interesting. Confess, dance in four parts, is to be found in the first edition of The Dancing Master (1651). It is a dance full of charm and invention, interesting to the very end which is not always the case with Playford. The dance is very precisely depicted as far as orientation is concerned which is important to reconstruct the unusual introductory movements. I do not follow Cecil Sharp in that version.We are dancing in the manor house of Villarceaux and the musicians are " Résonnez musettes" with Dominique Paris as leader Les danses Regency sont à la mode et elles tendent à éclipser le répertoire ancien édité de 1651 à 1686 par John Playford. C'est dommage, Confess est un bel exemplaire de tout le plaisir qu'on peut tiré de ce répertoire ancien inventif et harmonieux. Danse atypique en 4 parties, Confess tient le danseur et le spectateur en haleine du début à la fin car les enchaînements ne se répètent pas.
