The reason we use stems are because its more legible and readible in sheet music. The reason why you will sometimes see a one-line stem or two-line stem is because of the flags. One Flag = Eighth Notes Two Flags = Sixteenth Note To see a measure in music with all flags or all stems will be played the SAME EXACT way.
