In the next episode of our series on the yield pyramid, Pioneer Field Agronomist Troy Deutmeyer discusses the importance of nitrogen in growing corn. Very little nitrogen is needed in the first few growth stages for corn, but once it hits V8, nitrogen becomes a very important nutrient to attain optimal yields. Troy also reviews the pros and cons of the different forms of nitrogen commonly used for corn, including Anhydrous, Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) solutions, and Urea. Troy also talks about nitrogen stabilizers, and the benefits of adding stabilizers to your nitrogen program. He looks at two different types of nitrogen stabilizers: nitrifications inhibitors and urease inhibitors. Troy also goes over some factors that can have an impact on the effectiveness of your nitrogen program, including the slope of your fields and soil organic matter. Finally, Troy reviews nitrogen management with cover crops, as cover crops have different nitrogen needs, including needing more upfront nitrogen and needing nitrogen to be readily available near the root system.
