After being extinct as a spoken language in Cornwall at the end of the 18th century, it has been restored. Cornish continued to be learned within families and by individuals, and a renaissance started in the early 20th century. This knowledge also included some degree of ability to speak. The number of people who learn it as a second language is increasing, and only a small number of families today bring up their children using the revived form of Cornish.
