Creating the Iconic Moon/Sun Eclipse Compilation - Precise Alignment and Spacing
In today's video, we provide detailed instructions for creating that iconic compilation of the solar eclipse. This method also works for aligning lunar eclipse photos too… or for that matter, any compilation of photos lined up in a row. Although we are using Photoshop in our examples to produce this image, most photo editors have similar functionality and should be applicable. Table of Contents: 00:00 Start / Introduction 01:20 Calculating the Size 01:48 Selecting Photos & How Many 02:53 Height of the Final Compilation 03:08 Measuring Space Between Images 04:01Width of the Final Compilation 04:25 Spacing and Aligning 04:27 Create New Image & Load Images 05:33 Centering the Totality Image 06:56 Roughly Center All Other Images 07:52 Move Images Into Final Position 11:13 Fine Tuning Totality (Exact Centering of Totality) 12:33 Nudge Feature in Photoshop 13:35 Calculation Spreadsheet (building the spreadsheet we use) In today’s video we first calculate the size of the final image. In order to do that, we provide some guidance on determining how many photos and selecting which to use. Then, we show how to determine the height of the final compilation, space between photos and the overall width. Next, we provide details on how to get the spacing and alignment exactly right. To do that, first we center the middle Totality image. Then, we place the others on top of it and then move them into the final position. We finish with a couple of ancillary topics; How to get the middle Totality image centered exactly, using Photoshop’s Nudge feature and building the spreadsheet we use to assist with the calculations. This video assumes you have already completed post processing of your images… like exposure, saturation and rotation. We also assume you have finalized the Totality image that you’ll be using for the center shot… this may include stacking and blending multiple images to bring out the details of multiple exposures.
