Creative Play: Visual Vernacular!
One of the best parts of storytelling in American Sign Language (ASL) with your child is the experience of becoming the character and embodying the feelings and conflicts that each story unveils. Avoid the dull monotony of your 7th grade history teacher’s lectures and explore the unique visual qualities of ASL as you read with your child. Let’s begin with playing with the idea of “Visual Vernacular” as we practice describing and showing characters with our bodies. As you become more comfortable with visual vernacular, you will see your storytelling experience become more of an interaction with your child than, say, a dull history lecture. Enjoy this video with Sam Sanders exploring this topic and be sure to try this at home!
