A little explanation for this. I was doing some experimenting with a new plugin from http://aescripts.com call Crossphere Bokeh.
All of these shots are 100% synthetic, in the sense there is no real world footage. Yet the bokeh created from the plugin behaves very realistically. The first shot is a Element 3D space scene with Crossphere Bokeh animated on top of it. The second shot is just a blurred background shot, like what you might see on a jewelry ad with text in front of it.(It was also created with Element 3D.) The last shot is just a particle emitter with Crossphere Bokeh on top.
A few things I've found that help with the realism is to apply chromatic aberration on top of the bokeh. This gives nice color fringing on the edges of the bokeh. Also, overlaying film grain helps to sell the look.
