Current developments in Lightning Data Standards: status and uses

Accurate lightning data is becoming indispensable for modern thunderstorm warning predictions and lightning protection risk assessments. New versions of the IEC 62305 Lightning Protection standard (along with the IEC 62858) adopt the “Ground-strike point density (Nsg)” instead of the well-established “Flash density (Ng)” parameter in lightning protection designs. The South African Weather Service (SAWS)’s recent partnership with METEORAGE provides an invaluable contribution to reliable lightning data in South Africa.
