The Damascus (and half Damascus) technique is great for tightly woven pieces (aka weft faced cloth) that you want to display without fringe.
You can still use this technique with other styles of weavings, just make sure you add a number of rows of tightly woven plain weave on the edge you want to finish with the Damascus technique.
