Dance Code

The ever-present programming that people often shy away from is shown as more understandable through dance metaphors. A theatrical dance performance was produced at the Campus Commons Performance Hall at the UNC Campus. Employers appreciate their employees' understanding of some basics behind coding for faster communication on the job. It also supports prompt writing. We explored the conditions, and restrictions in various dances as compared to those in coding. We explored codes in different programming languages to delineate various dances and their rules. The viewers willing to learn or grasp ideas of coding are introduced to basic concepts in coding. It is an exploration of invisible patterns created by the movement of feet. It is presented to highlight the dynamics behind the image generated by music and the resulting movements of a dancer. All permissions were granted. In this three-part performance, an international team of coders, the composer, faculty, staff, and students from computer science, music, art, computer graphics, graphic design, opera, dance, and musical theater worked together to produce in a playful and subtle way a spectacle which shows basic topics that help non-programmers how to envision coding through dances.
