Dark Tower Song
Dark Tower Song “The world is tilted, and there’s an end to it.” -Roland of Gilead- I read those words and they stuck. The context within the world of the Dark Tower, along with implications in the real world…it just hit me. I wrote them down in my travel journal, but then time passed and I moved on. I started on the Dark Tower series in early lockdown…when it felt like the world was kinda breaking and everything was still real confusing and no one knew what was going to come next. It came as part of the book collection of my uncle-in-law Russ, who loved all the same nerdy fantasy books that I do, and it was the first thing I pulled out of the box. Those books got me through a lot and helped me process a world that was feeling a lot more like “dark fantasy” anyway. Two years later I stumbled across the Roland quote and it made me think again. About how messed up everything can feel…about how it seems like a horror story at times…and I just started thinking on paper. At first it felt like venting, bemoaning the state of things, but then I wondered if sometimes, in some ways, the world needs to be a little tilted… The Tacoma bridge collapse, direct vs. indirect sunlight, and a random line about how perfection indicates finality then cycles back to the Roland quote which has now somehow become a chorus… Second verse is mostly a creative Book-It report of the series, for which I intend to go claim the personal pan pizza that is my right. The last line is a thank you to Stephen King, for a story that was somehow exactly what I needed in a real crazy time. And it’ll start and end with the same line…just cause that seems right…
