DatavisZRH #015 Creating Empathy with Data Visualization
Creating Empathy with Data Visualization - by Gabrielle Mérite & Sonja Kuijpers --- DatavisZRH is a monthly meetup about data visualization in Zürich, Switzerland. --- The scientific nature of data and statistics has often led creators of data visualizations to use a robust mapping system between data dimensions and visual encodings, which correlates with minimalistic design principles and leaves little design space for non purely data accurate aspects. But is there more to data than raw numbers? How effective is a minimalistic design in conveying the uncertainty in the numbers, the bias in the data collection, or the emotions associated with the phenomenon that is depicted? Can an empathetic design of data visualizations help understanding the hidden dimensions of a dataset? Can quantitative and qualitative design go hand in hand? --- Gabrielle Mérite works as a freelance data visualization designer (https://www.gabriellemerite.com, https://www.instagram.com/gab.md/). Sonja Kuijpers leads the award-winning Studio Terp. (http://www.studioterp.nl/). --- September 16, 2020 --- Curation: Benjamin Wiederkehr & Luc Guillemot Event sponsored by Interactive Things https://www.interactivethings.com/
