Day 2 Module 9 | Waldorf Practical Arts Training
Welcome to Day 2 of for Module 9 for the Waldorf Practical Arts Training | Tuesday, March 31, 2026 These intensive trainings run three times a year: February, April and June. You may join anytime. There are a total of 9 modules (3 year program) with each module including a soft craft (led by Mona Lewis), a hard craft (led by Jack Bryant) and anthroposophical study (led by Terra Malmstrom) Participants may also join online but I recommend in person if possible! The energy of working together and being inspired by other students and the feeling of community is unmatched. Module 9 coordinates with grade 9 handwork and grade 12 hard crafts. The following description for the hardcraft for module 9 is taken by the WISC website. In the final module #9 hard crafts project we will build a one-string musical, strumming instrument. All previously learned woodworking techniques will be employed using a sequence of tasks suitable for 8th to12th grade practical arts classes. New techniques will be learned concerning fret layout and tuning peg installation, and the construction and use of a jig to help keep the shape symmetrical during the construction process. The following description for the soft crafts for grade 9 (module 9) is taken from the WISC website. Module #9 is all about tailoring. Each participant makes a shirt to fit his or her own body. They take their own measurements and help do the same for other participants. New skills come into play: measuring, fitting, altering the garment, as well as understanding more complex patterns and constructions such as collars, facings, and button holes that require concentration and care to complete. Tailoring is taught in high school. The anthroposophical study highlighted the six principle practices synthesized from Rudolf Steiner's lectures. The following description is taken from the WISC website for the study portion of module 9: Balance in Teaching: Creativity in Relationships Teaching exists between souls. In this 9th module, we talk about how imagination can help us stay calm and fresh in our relationships with students, parents, and coworkers. We practice the gesture of balance by making living pictures of the child's becoming, listening with genuine curiosity, and letting difficult things ripen in sleep. Our goal is to keep the inner balance that makes the work human, important, and alive.
