Deconstructing NDA by Billie Eilish

A look at the music theory, production, and songwriting techniques of NDA by Billie Eilish. This song has it all. Amazing chord progressions, unique production, an INCREDIBLE vocal performance (as always), and a cool take on song form that might be setting a trend for modern pop music. I've been wanting to sit down and listen to a Billie Eilish tune on my channel for a while and this one did not disappoint. I'm continually impressed with how she and her producer Finneas seem to throw aside all of the current conventions and yet still create massive pop hits. They are creating a template that all independent producers should follow: make the music you want to make, and if it's good, it will find an audience. Especially notable in this tune is the harmony. Billie uses her vocals to create REALLY interesting harmonies over the chords in the song. In addition to this, the synth patch that comes in during verse 2 recontextualizes the harmony of the song and gives our ears a really funky diminished one chord in minor. Take a listen for yourself!
