Defending Together 2v2 [2-004]

Defenders to remain connected as a defensive line with good alignment. Former All Black and current Crusader Backs Coach Daryl Gibson takes you sideline with the Crusaders to demonstrate this 2v2 defensive training drill. The drill focuses on alignment with emphasis on staying in line with the person you are defending with and holding a position inside your opponent. These key skills are reinforced consistently in the Canterbury and Crusader environment and can be taught to players of high school age and up. Level: High School & Above Categories: Defence Coaching Points: 00:0:44.000 - Get into position quickly 00:0:45.000 - Defenders align on the inside shoulder of the attacker and the 2nd defender aligns slightly behind the 1st defender 00:0:55.000 - Go forward 00:1:10.000 - The line is taken up by the 1st defender Common Faults: #1. Players slow to get into position #2. Poor alignment #3. No communication #4. Getting on the outside shoulder of the attacker #5. Quickly identify the opposing player Progressions: #1. Playing with time and space #2. Make area bigger #3. Add attackers & defenders Instructions: #1. Set up with 2 defenders and 2 attackers. #2. The defenders and attackers start at the side of a 10m long x 5m wide grid #3. On the command defenders go around the corner cone and the attackers either go around a close cone or the far corner. The coach will determine which so as to vary the depth of attack the attackers have. #4. Once around the cone the ball is passed by the coach to the attackers as they try and evade the advancing defenders. #5. Practice both sides and rotate positions and defenders. Contributors: #1.
