This video will show how to derive the efficiency for a Carnot engine. Efficiency is defined as E = 1-Tcold/Thot. This is the upper limit for efficiency of any real heat engine, but it is certainly worth the exercise to calculate. The diagrams and equations that you see here should already be familiar from your prior study of isothermal curves, adiabatic curves, the Carnot Engine and the Carnot cycle. Since this material is needed, I will review it very quickly before doing the derivation.
