The designTimber 2026 series continues with Rafter Walk, Highly Commended in the Public category of the 2025 Wood Awards.
Combining a steel primary structure with sustainably sourced tropical hardwood for the balustrade, deck and substructure, this 170 metre-long foot bridge forms the centrepiece of the revitalised Canada Dock in London.
With a synthesis of form, engineering and environmental design, Rafter Walk showcases how timber and steel can work together in complex geometries to create public realm infrastructure that is technically robust and deeply contextual.
In this webinar structural engineer Gioele Nunziatini (Whitby Wood) and specialist timber subcontractor Martin Self (Xylotek) discuss the design and fabrication of this exemplary timber project.
