This video is Part 4 of a series on Developing Evaluation Instruments. Part 4 – Observations and Field Notes focuses on three areas: how to create and conduct observations; how to structure and write observations; and, what artifacts to collect and how to evaluate them. The video compares qualitative and qualitative observation types and provides the advantages of unstructured observations. It covers the three steps of observation protocol and provides and, an example of an observation tool. With regard to field notes, the video considers the descriptive and reflective components, as well as reviewing Mulhall’s Field Note Components. It also discusses ways to record field notes and also provides some observation advice. The video also provides a brief overview of using artifacts and evaluating them with procedural and product checklists.
