Dining Table (Desert Alchemy Design)
I made a dining table with a steel base and wood top. I recently purchased a cheap welder from amazon to weld the base of this table. The welder is a Forney 299 120 volt flux core machine, it doesn't use shielding gas and thus produces a lot of sparks and spatter but I'm not an expert welder anyhow so this machine worked fine for my purposes. The top of the table is composed of four 2 x 12's joined with biscuits. My wood working on this project was a little rough because I don't have all of the right equipment (i.e. planer and joiner) but I decided I would rather make an imperfect table with the tools I have than not make a table at all. As a designer and maker it's easy to use the lack of access to tools and materials as an excuse to not make stuff. But i've decided to consider my lack of equipment a challenge in itself. Sometimes it's not as fun to do something the "right way". Sometimes it's more fun to start a project that you are not sure is going to work. Then if it doesn't work you can try again without feeling too bad and if it does work it's a nice surprise, and either way you learn something in the process.
