I’m excited to share this wall hanging with you today. The full piece measures 16 inches wide by 40 inches long. Cut 26 pieces of 3mm olive green string, each piece is 8 ft long. Fold each piece in half and attach to your wall hanging as I’ve done here using Lark’s Head knots. Leaf 1 I’m going to show you two ways to make your leaves. Either way will work it just depends on the look you are going for. For the first method cut 2 1 foot pieces and fold each in half. Attach them to your filler cord as I do here. For the second method which is what I will be using for this wall hanging, cut your string 10 inches long. Wrap the string around the filler cord from front to back and then tie a knot around the filler cord. Add 19 more 10 inch pieces to your filler cord (20 total) to create your leaf. Tie a knot at the bottom of your filler cord so that the string doesn’t slide down the filler cord (about 5-6 inches down from the last dhhk). Leaf 2 We will make another leaf on the right. Use the 14th cord from the right as your filler cord and tie 8 dhhks working down and to the left. Cut 23 10-inch pieces of 3mm multi-coloured twist string and attach them to the filler cord using the same method that we did to create the first leaf. Tie a knot at the bottom of the filler cord and then continue to fill in the rest of the leaf. Here’s what it should look like once complete. Leaf 3 We will make another leaf on the right. Use the 3rd cord from the right as your filler cord and tie 7 dhhks down and to the left. Start tying your dhhks 6 inches down from the bottom of the driftwood. Cut 25 10-inch pieces of 3mm olive green string and attach them to the filler cord as we did to create the other leaves. Don’t forget to tie a knot at the bottom of the filler cord and then cut off the excess string. Here’s what it should look like once complete. Leaf 4 We will make another leaf on the left. Use the 7th cord from the right as your filler cord and tie 14 dhhks working down and to the right. Start tying your dhhks 5 inches down from the bottom of the driftwood. I’ve flipped the top leaf over the top of the driftwood so I can work behind it. We want the working cords to line up straight here so it is okay to leave a bit of a space in between your knots as it will be hidden behind the front leaf anyways. For the bottom few leaves I wanted to map out the placement first before I added the rest of the string so what I did was tie a knot at where I wanted the bottom of the leaf to be (about 5-6 inches down from the last dhhk) and then I created the last couple of leaves and filled them in afterwards. Leaf 5 Use the 8th cord from the right as your filler cord and tie 5 dhhks working down and to the left. Start tying your knots 11 inches down from the driftwood at the top. Tie a knot on the filler cord where you want the bottom of the leaf to be. Leaf 6 Now that I’ve shown you a few times how to make the leaves I’m going to leave you to make the last two leaves with my directions. For Leaf 6 on the left, use the 3rd cord from the left as your filler cord and tie 6 dhhks working down and to the right. Tie a knot on the filler cord where you want the bottom of the leaf to be. Leaf 7 Use the 17th cord from the right as your filler cord and tie 5 dhhks working down and to the left. Tie a knot on the filler cord where you want the bottom of the leaf to be. For leaves 4, 5, 6, and 7 cut 25 10-inch pieces of string to fill in each leaf. For leaves 4, 5 and 6 I used multi-coloured string and leaf 7 I used olive green string. Brush out the leaves with a comb and/or a pet brush. I find that a pet brush works a bit faster but it also makes a bit more of a mess and can scratch the surface of what you are working on so I’m going to use a comb for now. I’d recommend placing something underneath your leaves if you want to use a pet brush that you don’t mind scratching up. Go back and forth between brushing and trimming until you’ve created your desired leaf shape. At this point you can leave as is or you can add a stiffening spray to the leaves or glue felt to the back of your leaves so that they keep their shape. You can find fabric stiffening spray and felt at most craft stores. Go ahead and brush out the remaining 6 leaves and then hang it up and trim the extra string hanging from the bottom as you see fit. Here’s how mine turned out. Thanks so much for watching!
