DIY Mini Macrame Plant Hanger Tutorial
Welcome to this video tutorial on how to make a mini macrame plant hanger. With this macrame you can place a mini pot or jar with a plant in it and hang in your room for natural ambiance. Note: this video was shot in portrait mode due to limited space and lighting. Below are the instruction outlines which have also been inserted onto the video. *** Instruction Outline What you need: Macrame cord (here using cotton cord, coloured, 3mm dia,) Binder ring, “S” hook, Beads, Scissors, Ruler, Pegs or binder clips (not shown) (To make macramé it’s best to find a place to where you can hang your cord, such as on a door handle or rail. Here we’ve hung it on some drawers. If you don’t have any place to hang, you can use some packing tape to stick to surface and work on your piece. Note, your arms can get very sore from knotting so be sure to give them a rest from time to time.) Measure out x1 meter of cord and cut. Repeat another 7 times so you have a total of x8 cords at 1m length. Holding all the cords together with ends even, slip through the binder ring so that the ring sits at half way up the cords. Hang on “S” hook to begin working. You should have 16 strands in total, all approx. 50cm in length. To pull the cords together at the top we’re going to create a Gathering Knot: Cut a piece of cord about 40cm long and form a loop at one end. Holding the loop against the cords, take the longer end and wind it tightly around the bundle of cords. Thread the end of the cord through the loop at the bottom. Holding all the cords in one hand, pull the tail end up the top until the loop is pulled tight. Trim tail ends and you can apply a bit of PVA glue to stop the ends from fraying. Separate the cords into four partitions with each section having four strands. Use pegs or binder clips to keep sections together until you work on them. Taking one section measure down 3cm to start your first knot (for a quick way of measuring you can try using your fingers as a guide.) With the four stands, have it so that there are two in the centre cords and one either side. The first knots we’re going to do is the Half Knot: take the right side cord and place it over the top of the two centre cords. Now take the left side cord and pull it over the tail end of the right side cord that is now on the left side. Bring the tail end of the left cord under the centre cords and up through the loop of the right cord. Pull on both cords to tighten. Repeating the Half Knot creates a spiral effect. Continue to create a total of 12 knots. If you’re lost with how many knots you’re up to you can count the ‘bars’ of each knot that cover the centre cords. Once you reach 12 knots you will notice that at the tail end of the outer cords are shorter from all the knotting than the centre cords. To save length we’re going to take the two outer cords and insert them through a bead pulling up to the 12 knots. The two outer cords have now become the centre cords and vice versa. Continue to make another 12 Half Knots underneath the bead. Once this is completed the tail ends of the cords should be around the same length. Now continue the steps on the remaining three cord sections of measuring 3cm down, making 12 knots, inserting bead, and another 12 knots. You should four sections now that spiral down. Now we’re going to create the ‘basket’ to hold the mini pot in. Take two sections into your hand, the section on the left, take the two most right cords, and the right section take the two most left to work with. Measuring around 3cm down make a Half Knot like we did earlier on. For the next step instead of making the knot again, we are going to reverse the order by putting the left side over to the right, the right cord over left tail-end and going behind the centre cords and pulling it out through the loop on the left. This is a Square Knot. Continue this around hanger to have four Square Knots in total. For the next row of knots measure down around 2.5cm and like with the knots from the first row in the ‘basket’ alternate/regroup the sections. Make another Square Knot however this time after making the first Half Knot, insert a bead over the two centre cords, and then make the second part of the Square Knot underneath. To close the ‘basket’ we’re going to do what we did at the beginning and create a Gathering Knot. Measure around 4cm down from the last Square Knot with bead and taking another cord around 40cm in length create a loop and wind around and pull closed, and trim tail. Your macramé plant hanger is all complete! You can trim off the ends to make them even length and put your mini pot into the ‘basket’ with a plant. Hang your creation and admire your handiwork. *** Filmed using: Samsung S7 Music: “Explore” Ikson from Youtube Audio Library for content creators Video created and published: July 2020 Follow Firebird Creations facebook/Instagram/Etsy/Pinterest: @firebcreations firebirdcreations.com.au Subscription to this channel is most appreciated
