In this video I show a step-by-step tutorial for making a DIY Resin Ocean Cube which is the first steppingstone for some larger projects I have in mind. I have been wanting to start using epoxy resin in my crafts for a while now seeing as there are so many resin project possibilities like resin jewellery, resin dioramas, resin lamps, resin tabletops, etc. The resin projects I would like to create next are a tropical reef and an ocean island diorama using clear epoxy resin with slight ocean blue tint. However, there is definitely a learning curve to use resin properly. Some of the questions I had to answer before attempting one of the more complex projects were how to prevent bubbles in the resin without a pressure vessel, how to make it look like a realistic ocean, how to create the resin mould, how to create a clear surface finish so that you can see what is inside the resin, etc. Another unforeseen challenge was how to manage the curing temperature for deep pour resin projects. Consequently, I decided to start with some experiments and then make smaller, easier resin craft projects which will help me to overcome these challenges step-by-step. The first resin project is this one which is an empty tropical ocean cube. I used Smoothe-On EpoxAcast 690 Epoxy Resin and coloured it using Ranger indigo coloured alcohol ink. The base is a piece of scrap wood which I covered with a layer of DAS Air Hardening Modelling Clay to create ocean sand ripples. The clay was then covered with some pva wood glue and sand. To prevent bubbles, I first poured a layer of resin over the sand which, once hard, would lock in any bubbles and dust particles from the rough sand surface. Next, I created a dam or mould using recycled plastic and poured the resin which solidified overnight without a pressure vessel. I am satisfied with the final result. The colour is a perfect ocean blue and the bubbles are minimal which creates a very realistic water effect with resin. I also like the look of the sand and ripples so I will definitely use this same technique in the next projects.
