Do You Embody a Coaching Mindset? 🧠 ICF Competency #2
Moving right along in our series on the ICF Core Competencies! Today, let’s sit for a moment with Core Competency #2: Embodies a Coaching Mindset. I like to think of this one in two distinct dimensions: the work we do when no one is watching, and how we actually show up when we’re in the thick of a conversation. 1) Outside the Conversation This is about your internal "maintenance program." It’s that ongoing commitment to lifelong learning and the humility to realize that every day is a school day. It’s about taking your work to supervision or mentor coaching to shine a light on those pesky blind spots we all have. And, honestly, it’s about tending to your own garden, making sure you’re resourced emotionally, physically, and mentally so you aren’t running on empty when a thinker needs you. 2) Inside the Conversation When the "camera is on," this mindset is what allows the other competencies to actually breathe. It’s demonstrating that grounded presence, listening for what’s beneath the surface, and choosing curiosity over your own clever ideas. A true coaching mindset means you have "no horse in the race." You’re there to partner with the Thinker, honoring their autonomy and trusting that they have the brilliance to connect their own dots. Key 2025 Updates to Keep on Your Radar: The updated 2025 Code of Ethics is really doubling down on the importance of ongoing development and supervision. We’re seeing a much bigger emphasis on self-care and regulation. Supervision isn't just about "doing it right"; it’s a necessary tool for managing ourselves on every level—emotional, physical, psychological, and even energetic—so we can hold a clean container for the people we work with.
