Sonic has had more than a few origin stories in the past. In the 90's, cartoons and comics usually took a crack at it.
Officially, from Sonic Team themselves... they don't seem to care much. Listen to me ramble about browns to blues and how I'd like to see Sonic's REAL origin story near the end.
