Doki Doki Panic
A taste of Yumekōjō - Doki Doki Panic! on the Famicom Disk System. The game that was retrofitted to become "Super Mario Bros. 2" in the US, or as it was called when it was reintroduced to Japan with the retrofitting, "Super Mario Bros. USA". This clip is highlighting a few differences between the Doki Doki disk game, and the Super Mario Bros. 2 NES game. Among the things I'm aware of: (a) different characters, (b) a save-based level select screen (it's a disk game, it had saves), (c) characters don't shrink when they're down to one HP, (d) the SMB2 mushroom is a heart, (e) the SMB2 "turtle shell" is a... black-face... mask? Maybe some changes were for the best... (f) different/Disk System-enhanced sounds for enemy deaths, and Birdo's egg spews (g) the more basic-looking slots screen for bonus lives. A couple other changes I've noticed that I didn't highlight in this clip are, (a) you can't hold B to run, as you could in SMB2, and (b) when you pick up a key, one of the masks on the same screen don't immediately come alive to chase you - but they still chase you when you exit to the next screen.
