Dolerite is a dark-colored, medium-grained mafic intrusive igneous rock, often termed diabase in North America. It forms in shallow crustal environments as dykes and sills, characterized by an interlocking ophitic texture of plagioclase and pyroxene. It is durable and commonly used in construction, paving, and, historically, monument building.
