More B flat! Never enough B flat! That’s what I always say. I really do always say that. And today on #texasstyletuesday we have a Bb classic, the inimitable three part breakdown, Done Gone. This tune appears on the Eck Robertson album (Which album is that, you might ask? Oh dear.) that really started it all. I grew up with this tune. Everyone played it. But at some point “everyone” stopped playing the extra half measure in the C part, including me. Well, to be fair, I never started playing in the first place. I wasn’t even entirely aware it existed, if I’m being honest. But if you go back to the Eck version, shazam, there it is. So I put it in here. I’m not sure if what I’m about to say is accurate, but I think maybe modern contests influenced the demise of the crooked C part and since we’re focusing on Texas style, and not contest style here, I say you embrace those extra beats and party with them all night long. Oh, and Tommy Jackson recorded this in D which results in an excessive amount of 3rd position, if you ask me. But if anyone should just be left to do his own thing, it’s Tommy Jackson. Who am I? If you’re learning this, be aware that every part sticks to the horse/donkey/horse/cow structure, even if it seems like it doesn’t. Texas style playing involves lots of ornamentation so it can get lost, but it’s there. Just take it slow and identify all your two bar sections then have at it.
