Posted: 12/17/2025 Genre: Traditional Bluegrass / Primarily Male Vocal. I wanted to write a new Bluegrass song, and decided to make it about an old time Blue Diamond mine worker's life. I've written about Lynch Kentucky Coal before, and you can't write about coal mining in Eastern Kentucky without mentioning the Blue Diamond mine company. Please follow along with the lyrics: DOWN THAT BLUE DIAMOND MINE Got a pickaxe on my shoulder And a lamp upon my head If I wasn't a coal miner What would I be instead Someone with a shadow From the Sun's blinding glow I wouldn't be digging In this Blue Diamond hole Hear the Opry on the weekend If my battery is strong Through the static I will listen To an old country song Go to church Sunday morning Then to sleep when it's night So I can start all over 'fore the coming of the light CHORUS Going deeper each day Down that Blue Diamond mine Gotta get a load of coal And a token for my time Gave the tokens to my woman To spend at the company store Gotta buy the kids some new shoes 'cause they don't fit no more Seems the cost is higher Than the money that I make But there's always credit That they will always take CHORUS Going deeper each day Down that Blue Diamond mine Gotta get a load of coal And a token for my time CHORUS Going deeper each day Down that Blue Diamond mine Gotta get a load of coal And a token for my time WORDS & MUSIC 12/17/2025 by: JOHNATHAN HART COPYRIGHT 2025 JOHNATHAN HART (ASCAP)
