Old friend No. 9 - Drawmer LX20 Expander/Compressor has left home. The LX20 is a very simple unit, designed for insertion into two mono or one stereo channel. It provides soft-knee compression with a single control for threshold and ratio, according to the manufacturer's programmed scheme with an uncalibrated '0 to 10' scale. Attack and decay times can also be adjusted. The expander side (basically a noise gate) can be switched out completely or brought in over a wide range of thresholds down to -50dB. Virtually any modern DAW software would provide this function 'in the box', on all channels, but this was the way we had to do things at the turn of the '90s! Drawmer is a respected manufacturer of signal processing equipments, and this unit with its unbalanced connections and pre-programmed compression law was targeted squarely at the project studio owner with limited funds during the early boom of home recording in the '80s. It cost about £130 when I bought it.
