Drez — mechanical logic, human ache.

Drez (new patch, new track) Drez takes its name from Drezno in the XAOC Leibniz system — derivative by design, unstable by nature. I recently added a second Pamela, which means 16 clocks, triggers, gates and envelopes, all locked to the same master clock, each with its own divisions, multiplications, probability and Euclidean logic. It shows: the rhythm is intentionally improper. The kick and snare act as anchors, almost the only thing holding the whole structure together as one movement. There’s a lot of micro-rhythm happening — in the melodies, but also in the percussive textures that slowly creep in. I keep gravitating toward true-zero FM moments, riding that edge where FM tips into dissonance, but still hides a fragile, sad sweetness underneath. The main melodic engine is Three Body: the arpeggiated line at the start comes from there, gradually joined by longer, harsher FM tones that lock in with the sub-bass. Those tones are driven by Spectraphon, adding weight and spectral tension. Toward the end, things briefly open up: multi-wave, almost chord-like structures appear, hinting at harmony without ever fully resolving. Beats are built around OhmForce for the kick, a noisy snare from Frap Tools Bagai territory, with heavy sample-and-hold modulation shaping filters and movement. Metalloid and Ultra-Perc from Steady State Fate are doing their thing — constantly shifting FM-ish percussion, never sitting still. Ultra-Perc is routed into a distortion module from Modulaire Maritime (France). I picked it up after my good friend Stazma reviewed it and basically talked me into it. It’s complex, a bit unruly, but full of strange, gritty textures that feel alive. This track lives in that uncomfortable space between structure and collapse — rhythm barely behaving, melody fighting through noise, everything breathing but never fully settling. #roelfunckenmusic #eurorackmodular
