Dumbarton Castle, located on a volcanic plug in Scotland, was formally built as a medieval royal castle by Alexander II around 1220 to defend against Norway. While the site has been fortified for over 1,500 years—serving as the 5th-century stronghold of Alt Clut—most, if not all, visible structures are 17th to 18th-century artillery fortifications.
