DV Analogue Digitisation Comparison
Scenario: MiniDV tape to be digitised. Problem: A Firewire connection on the PC is becoming rare. Especially for modern laptops, if the multichaining of Firewire 400-800-Thunderbolt-Thunderbolt 2/3 doesn't work, options for digitising DV (either MiniDV or Digital8) are limited. One method is to use the analogue capture process, similar to that used to digitise VHS tapes. This video compares a pure DV transfer on the left and an analogue capture of the same tape on the right. Contrary to the views of some, the result is pretty close and, in my view, the analogue capture is excellent. The left video was transferred using Scenalyzer. For the right video, the capture device/digitiser is an IOData GV-USB2, captured with the program AmarecTV with the Lagarith AVI codec, using the camera's (Panasonic GS-25) S-Video Out and A/V Out for audio.
