E-Collar Conditioning Mistakes
GOOD DOGS MINNESOTA is now DOGS DECODED! Follow the link below to enjoy all of our content! This is Mowgli's first time using the E-Collar and also a good impromptu explanation of "Blocking". Blocking can occur when we try to add something new to a learning sequence. If the dog (or any cognitive animal) has already learned that a command (or stimulus) means a reward will follow when they perform a specific behavior, they tend to mentally "block out" any stimulus that may occur between the known stimulus and the reward. This is referred to as BLOCKING and most of the time, we value this quality because it allows the dog to teach him/herself to disregard distractions. But when we want to add something new, we must add it BEFORE any known verbal command or body language so the dog can make a clear correlation between the new stimulus and a known behavior. In this case, Mowgli knows that "Here", and/or his handler backing up, means a Recall. At this stage, we have to make sure we are using the collar right BEFORE we are giving him any commands or visual cues so his brain can connect the collar to a known behavior. Note: the sound box does have a slight delay from when the button is pushed and the BEEP.
