He wrote this for Queen Kapi'olani to express his love for her. Queen Kapiʻolani visited California on her way to England to attend the Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. This song was a prayer for calm seas during her journey, an admonition to be careful in the cold of California, and a remembrance of her duty as Queen to their nation and beloved home.
