Hope you enjoyed this tutorial on creating cinematic black bars, also known as letterboxes in After Effects.
Note that for professional projects, the ideal way to do this is to actually change the dimensions of the composition, but for shorter videos meant for YouTube this works fine, and allows for keyframing.
Steps:
1. Create an adjustment layer. While in your composition, click Ctrl+Alt+Y to make a new adjustment layer, making sure it's above all other layers in the timeline.
2. Apply the effect. Search for the Motion Tile effect in the Effects & Presets panel and drag it onto the adjustment layer.
3. Adjust. Now, adjust the Output Height value to your liking, depending on how large you want the black bars to be. Set it to 76 for a "standard" 2.35:1 aspect ratio. You can of course keyframe this value to change the size of the black bars over time.
