Using just a few items we will build a compass.
This is great for teachers that are studying maps or magnets. Fun for people looking for activities to do with their kids.
Recommend going outside away from metal structures.
Materials - pin or needle, tissue paper, magnet, small bowl of water.
Rub the pin across the magnet 60 -100 times. Place the pin on a small piece of tissue. Place the pin and tissue on top of the water. The pin should float. When done correctly the pin will spin toward magnet north.
By finding north in this activity, could you find all the cardinal directions? How?
What are the cardinal directions?
How is magnet north different then true north?
Would this activity work in a survival situation, assuming you have the materials? Why or why not?
