Electronic Eye - 'Interchange'
This is the first of Richard H. Kirk's 'epics' that I really got into. These first two (square-wave bass) notes, when played properly, should set your nostrils and palate flapping! If you're listening to this on standard PC or laptop speakers, then you probably can't appreciate all the bass frequencies involved. My outboard PC speakers are pretty good, but they can't handle them either. When I play this loud even on just my MP3 player with 'earbud' headphones, it makes me go dizzy! Anyway... aside from all the bass-frequency machismo, this is a great track - one of my favourites from RHK. It's not only a great example of his 'long-form' tracks, but it was also probably the first time I consciously noticed how he seems to deliberately cut up samples (including rhythms) so that they seem to be incomplete or 'off-beat'. His stuff may not appeal to everyone - partly because of this seemingly brutal approach to samples - but he's a master of sampling and his technique gives him a sonic palette that is somehow unique to him. (Talking of which, is that piano sample mid-track a Miles Davis sample? I kind of assume it is, given RHK's love of Davis, but since I don't share that yet, I'm somewhat in the dark.)
