Elements - Air (31 EDO)
This is the last song in my Elements "album!" This time it's the element of air/wind. I went with the theme of an Irish folk dance. Wind symbolizes freedom and a kind of relaxed but energetic atmosphere. Irish folk music captures this feel perfectly. For the tuning system, I cheated. Since it's 31 EDO, I got away with using meantone temperament, which is so familiar to us that it's basically just 12 EDO but more in tune. ;-) As far as instrumentation, I made a lot of use of some new software. I used some AAS physical modelling software (String Studio) to produce all of the string sounds (including the harp which is actually a heavily modified guitar), and I used Chromaphone to model the bodhrán drum sound. The flute was made with Zebra, and the tambourine was just some samples native to Bitwig. I think this song turned out nicely, but it's easy to write in meantone temperament. The image is an aerial view of some fields in Tipperary, an Irish county.
