1,000+ packages of extra functionality are available for Emacs through ELPA and MELPA. Let's install some and test them out. I'll install the solarized theme and then play around with nyan-mode which gives us a much more colorful scrollbar.

M-x list-packages
M-x customize-group
M-x package-initialize or (package-initialize)
M-x nyan-mode
Note that the melpa package is no longer available and is unnecessary. You can just skip installing it.
