Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ) Data acquisition system is used for data processing, data conversion, data transmission and data storage The typical data acquisition system consists of sensors with necessary signal and display systems DAS are used to convert analog waveforms into digital values for processing Data acquisition applications are controlled by software programs developed using various general purpose programming languages such as BASIC, C, Fortran, Java and Pascal Data Acquisition Systems – Factors The important factors that decide the configuration and sub systems of the data acquisition system are as follows. Accuracy and resolution Number of channels to be monitored Analog or digital signal Single channel or multichannel Sampling rate per channel Signal conditioning requirements of each channel Cost Various General Configurations of DAS 1. Single channel possibilities (i) Direct conversion (ii) Pre-amplification and direct conversion (iii) Sample and hold, and conversion (iv) Pre-amplification, signal conditioning and any of the above 2. Multi channel possibilities (i) Multiplexing the outputs of single channel converters (ii) Multiplexing the output of sample-hold circuits (iii) Multiplexing the inputs of sample-hold circuits (iv) Multiplexing low level data Objective of a DAS Acquire the necessary data, at correct speed and at the correct time. Use of all data efficiently to inform the operator about the state of the plant. It must monitor the complete plant operation to maintain on-line optimum and safe operations. It must be able to collect, summarizes and store data for diagnosis of operation and record purpose. It must be flexible and capable of being expanded for future requirements. It must be reliable, and not have a down time greater than 0.1%. Applications of Measurements In many industrial applications, mechanical quantities like temperature, pressure, flow, velocity and so on are measured In robotic tactile and manufacturing applications In control systems when motion feedback is employed In process testing, monitoring and diagnostics applications Engineers and scientists in nearly every industry use data acquisition (DAQ), for validating and verifying a design prototype, teaching in a university lab, diagnosing a machine malfunction, or controlling a manufacturing process Contact Details Mr. S.S.
