Engineering at Home · Egg Drop Challenge
Ages 7 - 12 · Check in on our YouTube channel once a week for a new video featuring an engineering activity you can do with common objects and materials at home! All activities will begin with specific materials and instructions, but with your creativity you can experiment and make each activity your own. - - EGG DROP CHALLENGE For our project this week, we're taking the Egg Drop Challenge! The challenge is to see if you can make a housing or protective wrapping for an egg so that when it's dropped from a high place it won't break. Elsa will demonstrate two methods she tried, but we encourage you to use your imagination and be creative with what you have around your house! STEP ONE · Gather Your Materials - Raw Egg (at least 2) - Plastic Bags - Toilet Paper - Tape - Sealable bag - Flour …more materials that can be used to test: - Socks - Balloons - Newspaper - Parachute (coffee filter) - Cardboard box *MAKE SURE YOUR PARENT OR GUARDIAN DOESN'T NEED THE EGG AND FLOUR FOR DINNER!* :D STEP TWO · Prepare your first egg for the drop test! For our first test we're using toilet paper, plastic bags, and tape. First, wrap the egg in toilet paper, then fold your plastic bags into squares and fold them around the egg, taping each one to keep it in place. STEP THREE · Prepare your second egg for the drop test! For our second test we're using a sealable plastic bag, and two cups of flour or other powder mixture. Pour half of the flour into the open bag, then place the egg in the middle, and pour in the rest of the flour. Then seal the bag. STEP FOUR · Find a space with hard ground to test the egg drops -- we suggest outside or somewhere inside with an easy to clean surface. - Once you find a good testing place. Hold up your first test, and drop it once. Unwrap it carefully to see the results! - Repeat this with your second egg test, dropping it from a high place, and then unwrapping carefully to see the results! These are the examples we made, but we encourage you to get creative and see what you may have around the house that can protect the egg when it's dropped! We suggest using things that can be thrown away after you're done with the tests for easier clean-up. - - Spark Central is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that ignites the creativity, innovation, and imagination necessary for people to forge the path to their best future.
