This is a video showing double diffusion in a lab setting. The intended audience for this video is upper-division undergraduate level. This video specifically was created for Introduction to Physical Oceanography at UCLA in Fall 2020 taught by Dr. Andrew Stewart, Jordyn Moscoso, and Clara Si. For more visualizations and experiments see the DIYnamics Website! https://diynamics.github.io/pages/about.html If you have any questions, please include them in the comments below! For instructors -- A short list of questions for discussion: 1. Why is the pressure term not included in the equation of state? 2. What is another term for the double-diffusive instability that causes water masses A and C to mix? 3. After water masses A and C mix (call this mixture water mass D) do you expect water masses B and D to mix? 4. What kind of surface heat fluxes causes water mass C to cool and forces the double diffusion? 5. Explain static stability, at one point do you expect the stratification to be at equilibrium?
