Essential Spawn Comics

Spawn burst into the scene in the earky 1990s as one of the first major characters of Image Comics as the flagship series in Todd McFarlane's Studios. Like other heroes from the publisher, his stories mixed great artwork with less than stellar writing. To fix that, McFarlane sought the help of some great names in comics, like Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman, which would lead to legal battles over ownership of characters. When the initial buzz settled, Spawn had carved a niche in the market, with enough of a readership to keep going and has recently surpassed Cerebus as the longest-running independent (non-Marvel or DC) comic book series.
