It’s one of the most iconic album covers by the most famous band in the history of music. But how many people do you think you could name on the front cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band? There are 58 unique figures on the front, and every single one of them is there for a reason. So in this video, I’ll give you a guided tour of everyone on this cover: who they were, what the Beatles thought of them, and how they ended up here. Some of these people are those the Beatles remember from childhood. Others are the keys to what the Beatles themselves were absorbing in 1966–67—literature, comedy, art, psychedelia, and the avant-garde—that can enrich our understanding of the album and their work in its entirety. Not including the Beatles themselves or their wax figures, an unidentified American legionnaire, a hairdresser’s wax dummy, or any of these little figures down here of Snow White, Hindu goddess Lakshmi, or a Fukusuke doll, there are 58 unique figures on the cover. There are 11 writers, 11 actors, 9 artists, 8 musicians, 7 comedians, 6 religious figures, 3 athletes, 3 intellectuals, 2 political or military figures, an explorer, and a mythical character. There’s 26 Americans, 12 English, 5 Germans, 4 Indians, 3 Irish, and one Welsh, Scottish, Swiss, Peruvian, and Italian. Excluding the fictional ones designed by men, there’s also only six women. This video is fully chaptered, so you can watch it however you want.
