Evil, fear, control. Criminals will make threats. Once criminals understand that you can be controlled through fear you become the pawn of criminals. There is a good chance that you will be worse off taking advice from evil than resisting. Criminals won't mention the downside of their advice much. Consider the common case of the tyrant. They threaten force if you don't comply, send you off to fight for injustice, and get you killed. If you don't break free of the control through fear at some point then you are pretty much a doomed pawn. Brutal truth theory: You are better off in the end facing the truth.
